Keep the Faith with Ty’Ann Brown: Be an Everyday Hero

Guideposts’ VP of Ministries shares tales of lesser-known Biblical heroes who can inspire us in our own lives.

Ty'Ann Brown, Guideposts' Vice President of Ministries

Hello everyone, I’m Ty’Ann Brown, encouraging you to keep the faith.

What’s the best book of all time? Come on, you know the answer to this one. This is easy. It’s the Bible. It’s full of stories of amazing men and women who did incredible things, all in the name of God.
Some of them started out as regular folks– like King David, right? He was a shepherd boy who was chosen to be king and he defeated Goliath, he also conquered Jerusalem. Then there’s others like Moses, who was called to lead the people of Israel, and he parted the Red Sea to help Israel from their enemies.

Now, many of us probably won’t be partying any Red Sea—or any sea for that matter—but the Bible is full of unsung heroes who have done amazing things and many of them, we don’t even know their names, but their seemingly small acts have made a huge impact and some eternal impacts.

Do you know the story of Abigail? Abigail was in an arranged marriage with a wealthy man, but yet often silly man named Nabal. Nabal had offended King David because he wouldn’t provide for his troops. So King David got upset and he planned to kill Nabal and all of his followers. But Abigail came to the rescue. She had pleaded with King David and she’d brought him gifts and asked that he would show mercy.
Ultimately, King David recognized that Abigail’s intervention was a blessing from God, and so he sent her home in peace. Abigail was an everyday hero.

In the book of Acts, we meet Paul’s nephew. Now, we don’t know his name, but we do know that he saved Paul’s life. In this story, there were mobs who were planning to kill Paul, but his nephew risked his life by telling the commander of his plans, and so the city official listened and then they ensured Paul’s survival. Now, this unnamed nephew, he blew the whistle on injustice and he became an everyday hero.

There are countless unsung heroes throughout the Bible that show us that small acts can have a big return. You can be a hero by playing out your acts of faithfulness. Now, you may be thinking, I’m not that important. I don’t have much to offer. I’m a single parent. I haven’t been to church in awhile. The list goes on, but in your daily life, as simple as it may seem, you too can play out your acts of faithfulness and be a hero to someone else.

Romans 12:6 speaks of the different gifts that we have by the grace of God and that we should use them. So I offer you to use the gifts that God has given you. You can volunteer, even if it’s just an hour a week. Or you can make a call to an elderly person who may be alone, or you can call someone and pray for them. Whatever you choose to do, know that you can change someone’s life or you can change your own life.

Hey, you may even change the course of history. God bless you, keep the faith.
