Keep the Faith with Ty’Ann Brown: Lonely No More

Guideposts’ VP of Ministries reminds that while social isolation can be difficult, we can use this time to draw nearer to God.

Ty'Ann Brown, Guideposts' Vice President of Ministries

Hello everyone, I’m Ty’Ann Brown, encouraging you to keep the faith.

There is an epidemic of loneliness in our society these days. Lots of experts from psychologists to pastors to medical doctors have all talked about the negative effects of this lack of connection. In 2017, the Surgeon General even named loneliness as a major public health concern.

Too much time on all of our electronic devices and social media sites have certainly contributed to this problem, and now, with social distancing regulations in place due to the coronavirus, the loneliness issue has gone into overdrive as people have been physically isolated from their family members, their friends, their colleagues and their neighbors. It is totally a whole new world.

But we have to be honest that way before coronavirus spread across the globe, many of us have dealt with loneliness. And it can be situational. Perhaps a spouse leaves and divorces you or a family member has died or you lose a job. Sometimes you can be surrounded by family members and friends, and have a life that to many others would seem picture perfect, but you know personally that you are consumed with aching loneliness.

Now, way back in the beginning of the Bible, God had pointed out that it wasn’t good for man to be alone. So in the book of Genesis, it is written that, “The Lord God says, it’s not good for man to be alone. I will make a help meet that is fit for him.”

So we must understand first that, there is a difference between loneliness and solitude. Many people are energized by bouts of solitude. Whether it’s taking a walk in the park, or curling up with a cup of coffee, moments of solitude can help you to reenergize, refresh and refocus on what’s more important in life.

Moments of solitude can also be the ideal way to connect with God. And here’s the secret: Once you connect with God and make Jesus Christ as your Savior, you have taken the first step to conquering loneliness.
During His time on Earth, Jesus ministered to countless lonely people. And He can minister to you today as well. The Bible tells us in James 4:8 that if you draw near to God, He will draw near to you.

Because it doesn’t matter how many Facebook friends you have or how many Instagram friends you have or even how many real friends you have. The reality is that loneliness is an inside job. So, while it may seem like a contradiction, seeking out some solitude may end up being the best thing for you to conquer your loneliness. Keep the faith. God bless you.
