For a long time, the idea of being a warrior lived in my imagination. Then our son enlisted in the military and went off to war, and the concept became all too real.

Before our son was deployed, I watched his transformation from civilian to soldier. The months of training and preparation coupled with intense discipline made the change possible. Watching his process, I found my own calling. God was turning me into a prayer warrior.

While our kids were growing up, I’d always done my best to stand between them and danger. Now, with a son about to leave for battle, that was no longer possible. Or was it? God showed me that I could fight for my son in a different way—on my knees.

I struggled at first, wanting to be a powerful prayer warrior. I yearned to rattle the gates of Heaven with the strength of my prayers, covering my son with the protection he needed. But it didn’t come easily. Prayer is hard work.

And just like my son, it took months of training and preparation coupled with discipline to make my transition possible. But I stuck with it, and now prayer is an integral part of my life. Our son is out of the military now, but I’m still just as passionate about praying for the men and women who serve our country. The idea of being part of God’s shield, protecting those who protect us, is an honor I’ll never relinquish.

Then I heard the voice of the Lord, saying, “Whom shall I send, and who will go for Us?” Then I said, “Here am I. Send me!” (Isaiah 6:8)
