When Prayer Goes Unanswered

Staying the course when heaven is silent is a challenge. But one thing’s certain: We’ll never resolve a communications problem with God if we stop praying.

In the comments to my September 21 post someone asked, “Why do I feel God is not listening to me?”

Whoever that was, I seriously want to hug you. I’ve been in that lonely place. And after wandering through it for a long while, I wrote about it in a piece which I invite you to read: “Saying Yes to an Unanswered Prayer.”

Staying the course when heaven is silent is a major challenge. But one thing’s certain: We’ll never resolve a communications problem with God if we stop praying. We can work through our confusion while we continue to walk in God’s way. We can put a name to our fears (I called mine “But I thought you promised…”) and go on loving God in every other way we know how.

In the midst of unfathomable silence, God is still God, and worthy of praise. Or as Habbakuk so beautifully put it:

Though the fig tree does not bud
and there are no grapes on the vines,
though the olive crop fails
and the fields produce no food,
though there are no sheep in the pen
and no cattle in the stalls,
yet I will rejoice in the LORD,
I will be joyful in God my Savior.
(Habbakuk 3:17-18)

Which points to one other thing we can do: Turn to the Bible to find examples of others who struggled—and continued in faith.
