A Dad Who’s Always Got Your Back

Military lingo for “who’s got your back” is “who’s got your six?” For this military mom, the answer is ultimately the same. God.

Having a son enlist in the military was a truly eye-opening experience. One of the biggest learning curves for me was all the new lingo. I really believe the military has an acronym for everything. Beyond that, they also have a language culture that sets them apart and immediately identifies them to one another.

What I didn’t realize is how much that language culture would come to identify and set me apart.

Even though our son is now honorably discharged, I still can’t get out of the habit as classifying the people I meet into two groups. Those with military connections are simply military. And those who lack that connection are civilians.

But one of the most important things I discovered was that in the military, someone always has your six. In civilian lingo, that would equate to “has your back.” During that part of our lives, I learned just how critical support is.

Our military men and women know how to work as a team, always watching out for each other. That’s something that quickly becomes a part of the entire family—even those of us not officially enlisted.

How to Give Our Troops Hope and Inspiration

But as important as it was to have a person “on my six.” I also learned that there’s One who is always watching, always ready to defend and always equipped to conquer. When we let Him, God is the one who ultimately has our six.

Do not fear, for I am with you; do not anxiously look about you, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, surely I will help you, surely I will uphold you with My righteous right hand. Isaiah 41:10 (NASB)
