Busy Isn’t the Answer

My house had never been cleaner. Every day I worked all day and cleaned house in the evenings. I scrubbed walls, vacuumed daily, even cleaned baseboards and windows. I’d do anything to stay busy and to wear myself out before I dared to go to bed. 

Being still and quiet was a scary place for me.

With our son away at war, my mind was a battlefield. I had to keep it engaged to keep it away from places I didn’t want to go. What-ifs lingered just below the busy surface of my mind, waiting to drag me into their depths of hopelessness.

Then I got sick. It wasn’t anything major, just a miserable head-cold. But it left me too weak to stay busy. All I could do was lay in bed and think. Sure enough, my thoughts began to go down those dreaded paths. In desperation, I turned to the Bible on my bedside table. I flipped through well-loved passages and let God’s promises quiet the turmoil.

I don’t like to be sick, but that simple head cold was one the best things that ever happened to me. It forced me to face my fears and find a real solution to my dilemma. Being busy wasn’t the answer, but relying on God was.
