In college, I was a costume design major, and for several years I was fortunate to work as a costume designer in community theater.

I love the theater—at least as long as I can work out of the limelight. Being involved with the productions, transplanting the audience to a different reality is one of my passions–and probably why I love writing so much.

One year, I was on the costume design team for a production of Camelot. I’ve always been fascinated by King Arthur and working on the costumes was a dream come true.

I worked on several of the king’s elaborate court costumes, but the staff was not allowed to work on the armor. Instead, it was outsourced to a company that specialized in that type of historic costuming.

After several of the pieces arrived for fittings, I discovered why it took such specialized craftsmanship.

The armor—even just for stage wear—had to cover the vulnerable areas yet provide a full range of motion. Because if you think about it, an actor—much less a warrior—is pretty useless if he can’t move around.

The armor that God gives us is like that too. It must come from Someone whose specialty is making protection that covers us where we’re vulnerable but offers us a full range of motion.

It’s God’s provision that gives us the strength and stamina to stand firm, and move nimbly, when we’re fighting life’s toughest issues. We can rely on that same protection for those we love in the military. Even though they’re miles away, we know that God has equipped them for the battles they’re facing.
