“Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the LORD your God is giving you.” (Exodus 20:12, NIV)
Sunday, July 24, has been designated as Parents’ Day. While we know we’re supposed to honor our parents, I think this takes on a wider meaning when we look at those who’ve had parents in the military.
When blessed with good parents, you receive the love and care and encouragement you need. If you become a parent yourself, you realize how much your parents did for you. That alone is reason enough to follow what the Bible says and give them honor.

But there are also parents who’ve added another level of sacrifice to that resume—military service. Anyone who’s had a loved one join the military understands the magnitude of what those men and women undertake. And it’s the time spent in the military that makes this verse so poignant. Without those parents’ willingness to serve, we might not have America—the land the Lord gave us.
On Parents’ Day, give those who’ve served an extra big hug. God has used them to provide a great country for the rest of us to raise our children.
