I used to take the beauty of the fall foliage for granted. Then we had a few years where the colors weren’t as gorgeous as usual. That led me on a quest to find out why some years were prettier than others. It turns out that, among other things, the trees need the stress of cold nights to bring forth the most vibrant colors. It’s the adversity that brings out the beauty.

As usual, I took this lesson in nature and looked at the people around me who’ve suffered through adversity. Of course the ones I saw first were the military families and members that I meet on a daily basis. These families face seasons of stress that aren’t unlike the seasons we see in nature.

So as we celebrate this fall season, let’s also celebrate the beauty of perseverance, service, and sacrifice in our military and in their precious families.
