I took such a good shower last night.
Hurricane Irene took out our power for too many days and hot water was a distant memory. The refrigerator was full of food because I’d stocked up for the storm. All our neighbors were in the same boat, so there was no giving away the ribs, chicken and big fresh batch of potato salad I’d whipped up to keep us distracted from the wind and rains. The only thing to do was eat as much as we possibly could (I’m still stuffed) before the rest went bad.
So we spent a lot of time around the candlelit table. And we used every candle in the house, too. Lucky for us, the kids had bought a whole pack of tea lights at the Dollar Store to use in an art project with the babysitter. I arranged the little silver pots on a round platter in the center of the dining table and lit every one. I don’t think Martha Stewart’s own house could have looked any better in a blackout!
As soon as the power came on, my daughter posted a picture of our centerpiece on her Facebook page, with the caption “We make the best of blackouts :)”
Who cared if we went a couple of days without showers? We were thankful and blessed and full of prayers for so many people who need them in the wake of Hurricane Irene.
