Someone Cares: ABC’s of Giving

Her daughter, who looked forward to the first day of school, came up with a way to share her joy with those less fortunate.

Two years ago at church we heard an announcement for a school-supply drive. My daughter, Micah, then 11, perked up. She loved getting ready for the first day of school. “It must stink for kids who don’t have the right stuff,” she said. When we did her back-to-school shopping she asked if we could get extra notebooks and pens to donate. I gladly obliged.

Last year my husband’s friend told us about Citizens Caring for Children, a program in our state that provides age- and gender-specific supplies and a backpack to foster kids. We got the name of a girl going into seventh grade, like Micah, and Micah had a blast at the office-supply store picking out everything on the girl’s list. Regular No. 2 and “cooler” mechanical pencils. Notebooks with puppies and kittens on the front. Book covers in tie-dye and neon colors.

Micah learns a lot in the classroom, but she’s learned about generosity in the school-supply aisle.
