My friend Karen, whom I was visiting in Florida, took me to her friend Lori’s to see her quilts. But what caught my eye at Lori’s was a pillow stitched with a passage from Psalm 4:8: “In peace I will lie down and sleep, for you alone, O Lord, will keep me safe.” My mom was having trouble sleeping, so I wrote down the verse to make a similar pillow for her.
“Do you have an embroidery machine?” asked Lori.
“No, but I can embroider the old-fashioned way.” Slower, but it’s what I knew.
The next day, when Karen and I returned from a walk, we found a package addressed to me on the stoop. Inside was a soft cotton pillowcase embroidered with the words of Psalm 4:8. Tucked in the folds was a note: “To your dear mother from a new friend.”
The stitched verse quickly brought my mother comfort, just as the handwritten words new friend brought a smile to my face.
