Do you sometimes find yourself wishing you could get as excited about Christmas as you once did? When you started counting off the days before the leaves were even off the trees? And it wasn’t just about the presents and the food (though that was a big part of it). It was seeing the crèche go up at church and decorations everywhere. It was a mailbox full of cards and folks being just a little nicer. It was catching my mother slipping some boxes under her bed and my father turning on holiday music in the car instead of the boring news. It was us altar boys getting to wear red cassocks for Advent rather than our usual black ones. Very cool.
Lately I’ve found myself being able to recapture the magic of Christmas. For the past three years the staff here has created a big, beautiful, full-size keepsake edition of Guideposts called The Joys of Christmas. This year’s includes sections on the joys of miracles, traditions, children and holiday cooking. Working on these wonderful stories of faith and seeing the gorgeous art and photography come to life reignites my Christmas spirit. I get to read some classics from Mysterious Ways, What Prayer Can Do and Daily Guideposts, plus lots of new, heartwarming stories of Christmas joy from readers like you, stories that carry the message of the season. There’s even some poetry. One big bonus for me this year: My good friend, beloved author Debbie Macomber, invites us into her kitchen and reveals the secret ingredient to the perfect holiday meal. Even better than a red cassock.
I love to look up on my bookshelf and see three editions of Guideposts’ The Joys of Christmas lined up in a row. Wouldn’t this year’s edition look nice on your bookshelf or a loved one’s coffee table?
