Late April in New York means tulips, warm weather (we hope) and the annual Tribeca Film Festival!

The now 9-year-old festival kicked off this week and will play host to a number of uplifting and inspiring films. The two-week event was started in 2002 by Oscar-winning actor Robert De Niro and friends as a way to revitalize and uplift the Tribeca neighborhood of New York City, which was devastated physically and emotionally in the aftermath of the World Trade Center attacks on 9/11.

But you don’t have to live in or near New York to enjoy this year’s film selections. Visit the Film Festival website, and you can watch some of them online! You can also watch some on your television, depending on your cable provider’s Video On Demand offerings.

Last year’s festival introduced us to the inspiring story of Monica and David, a young married couple living their lives to the fullest, despite both having Down syndrome. The film won the coveted prize for Best Documentary at Tribeca and aired on HBO last October.

Here are some photos from the opening festivities! Stay tuned for inspiring movie recommendations and reviews from Tribeca.
