The kids will love making these holiday treats.

Guideposts: Turkey Cookies for Thanksgiving

Lots of people talk about the meaning of Christmas, but I wanted to teach my children the meaning of Thanksgiving. I put together these delightful turkey cookie cards, and the kids wrote on each feather. Hand them out to teachers or friends or use them as nameplates on your holiday table.

Ingredients

1 c. flour ½ c. granulated sugar
1 c. oats ½ c. firmly packed brown sugar
½ tsp. baking soda ½ c. peanut butter
½ tsp. baking powder 1 egg
¼ tsp. salt 1 ½ tsp. vanilla
1 stick butter, softened 6 squares semi-sweet baking chocolate, coarsely chopped

Preparation

1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Mix flour, oats, baking soda, baking powder and salt. Set aside.

2. Beat butter, sugars and peanut butter in large bowl with electric mixer on medium speed until light and fluffy. Add egg and vanilla. Mix well. Gradually add flour mixture and blend with mixer. Stir in chocolate.

3. Drop 1¼-inch balls of dough, 2 inches apart, onto baking sheets. Bake 10 to 12 minutes or until lightly browned. Cool 1 minute, then completely on wire racks. Makes about 1 dozen large cookies. Wrap cookies in plastic after cooled.

4. Use cardboard to make templates for feathers and head. Cut out construction paper feathers of varying colors. Use cream-colored paper for turkey’s face, yellow for beak and red for snood. Write message on tail feathers and attach in a fan formation with double-sided tape. Attach feathers to cookie. Draw eyes with marker. Glue on beak and snood. Attach face.
