How beautiful on the mountains are the feet of those who bring good news, who proclaim peace, who bring good tidings, who proclaim salvation, who say to Zion, “Your God reigns!” (Isaiah 52:7, NIV)
I was sitting in the nail salon treating myself to a rare morning of pampering with a pedicure when the young woman walked in. Her young son was engrossed in a hand-held electronic device. After settling him in a chair near the front of the shop, she approached the technician. “Today I want a patriotic pedicure.”
The technician glanced at her I-love-my-soldier t-shirt and didn’t bat an eye. She seated her at the station next to mine. The client went on to explain what she wanted—red, white and blue with glitter and shine. She turned to me and grinned, “My husband is coming home tomorrow, and I want everything about me to scream how much I love and support him.”
Help Guideposts Support Our Military
As we talked, I learned this was his fourth deployment, and they had three kids still at home. “It’s not always easy being a sometimes-single mom, but it’s worth it to support what he does.” I nodded and smiled, but inside, all I felt was awe at this woman’s incredible attitude.
I don’t know why her attitude surprised me. It’s more normal than not for military wives. But it never fails to amaze me when I see it. These incredible women support their husbands, taking care of the needs at home with grace and panache.
May 12 is Military Spouse Appreciation Day. I encourage you to take time to thank these courageous people in your community. Even though they aren’t on the front lines, they are the backbone of our military and deserve all the recognition and gratitude we can give.
