When the Perfect Moment Doesn’t Matter

A military mom learns not to get rattled by life’s interruptions and forge ahead.

This is the day that the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it. (Psalm 118:24)

It happened again. I was in the car with my camera and all around me God was showing out. The sunset was one of the prettiest I’d ever seen, but wires, poles and buildings marred the sky. Annoyed, I gritted my teeth and kept driving, hoping for a better view. I wanted to record this beauty to remember forever. I never did find the perfect place but finally settled on one with the least amount of visual clutter.

Life with a loved one in the military is often like this. We plan and try to make everything just right in our family schedule and activities, but life won’t cooperate. The interruptions crop up–a deployment, an unexpected training requirement or yet another change of duty station–frustrating our efforts to keep things in perfect balance.

For me, this is a decision point. I can either go ahead and snap the picture–forge along with our family plans–or I can wait for perfection and miss out altogether.

That evening in the car I finally stopped and snapped the picture. And even though it may not have turned out professional-photographer perfect, I love it. It brings me joy because when I look at it, I remember what God did that day, instead of the clutter in the foreground.
