Last week was an unusual one, but it made me think about something important.

My husband and I had gone out to dinner. Just as we sat down, I received word that one of my sweet friends had passed away unexpectedly. I hadn’t even known she was sick until a few days before and hadn’t realized it was that serious.

She was such a lovely lady, and I loved bumping into her at various film-related events that we both attended. We sometimes worked on projects together, giving each other feedback on screenplays. She always did it with kindness, and I loved picking her brain since a wealth of wisdom was stored there from her many years in the industry. Spending time with her was always a joy, and I was deeply saddened when I heard the news.

Facebook was also full of posts about a lovely 16-year-old girl who died in a tragic accident. She was an unusual young woman who loved God and touched so many lives. I wiped away tears, reading posts from her family who were facing a heartache nobody should ever have to endure.

That’s when I thought of something life-changing: I don’t want to wait and say wonderful things about people I love after they’re gone. I want to say them now while they can hear them, while those words will mean something to the ones whose hearts are connected with mine.

I often tell family and friends that I love them and remark about the things that make them special, but I want to take it a step further. I want to think about how precious they are in my life and make sure that they know that.

I challenge you to come on this journey with me. I’ve decided to choose one person each week and to really think about why they’re special to me. Then I’ll share my thoughts with them. I have a feeling it will touch them, but it will be a bigger blessing to me.

Is there someone that you need to say those words to today?
