Heaven’s Music: The Way I Am

Her engineer boyfriend liked things to be perfect. And his musical proposal of marriage was just that.

A ukulele

After four years of dating my engineer boyfriend, I knew he liked to do everything perfectly. Careful, methodical, that was Thomas.

When Thomas’s car pulled into the driveway to pick me up for a picnic, I knew I was in for a treat.

“I packed us the perfect lunch,” he said.

At the park, we sat down at a picnic table by the water. He unloaded the basket and I realized he wasn’t exaggerating. “Cheese fondue! My favorite!” Only an engineer would attempt fondue at an outdoor picnic.

“Close your eyes,” Thomas announced, standing up. “I’ll be right back.”

I closed my eyes and dipped into the fondue until I heard Thomas’s footsteps approach again. “Open!” he said. “And don’t laugh.” Thomas was holding a…ukulele? Thomas was a scientist, not a musician.

“You play the ukulele?” I asked.

“Just one song,” he said. “It took me a year of practicing. Here goes.”

Hands trembling, he plucked out the opening notes to “The Way I Am” by Ingrid Michaelson. I loved that song! Thomas knew all the words but changed one line: “I love the way you call me baby/And Emma, will you take me the way I am?”

Surely my engineer could have built a machine to pop the big question. That would have been just perfect for him. Instead his proposal was perfect for me. Yes!
