“Aunt Lynn, are y’all still doing your five piano events?” My friend asked his aunt that question while we were on a trip together last week. I’ve never seen a concert like that, but it sounded fascinating.
When I asked her about it, Lynn explained more about what they did. She said they had five pianos on the stage and sometimes added a sixth one. And on occasion, they would have three people playing at each piano. Can’t you just imagine the richness of the sound filling the room while they played!
Lynn said, “They send each of us our music, and we practice by ourselves until we’ve mastered our music. Then right before our concert, we get together and run through everything. And then she said the words that really caught my attention, “We all do our part.”
The result is an evening of amazing music.
Sweet friends, what if we all did our part for God? What if we did the task He asked us to do—even if it didn’t seem important? Can you imagine the sweet melody that would result if we all did that as a Christian community?
I’ve been a mom with a house full of small children. It’s exhausting, and some days it can seem like a thankless and never-ending job. I suspect there are some young moms who are discouraged today, who are looking at trails of toys and mountains of laundry and wondering how any of that could be valuable to God.
But that’s the task He’s given you right now. It’s part of the music of your life. And you know what? In the midst of those toys and laundry, the sweet moments arrive, along with opportunities to plant seeds of faith in the lives of your children.
Billy Graham’s mother probably felt the same way occasionally as she fulfilled her task of being a mom. But God had given her a specific task: to raise her son for Him. She played her part—never having a clue of what God had in store for her son—but look what God has done through the life of Billy Graham!
Friends, you might drive a trash truck. Or you might mop floors and clean bathrooms for a living. Or perhaps you dig ditches while the sweat drips from your face. Those tasks might seem lowly to you, but if they’re not done, people will feel the results.
And sometimes the tasks God gives to us seem equally unimportant as we do them. But just like every note on a page of music is vital to the overall melody, you are a necessary part of God’s design.
Be faithful. Play the part He’s given you. It might not seem like much now, but someday when all the pieces are in place and He allows you to hear the full melody of your life, you just might be amazed at how vital your part was in His master production.
All you have to do is play your part.
