Everyone wants to make a difference in the world. There has to be a way for me to put my energy and creativity to good use, I thought when I sat down on the couch to watch television one night.
“Due to many people abandoning the rabbits they were given for Easter,” the newscaster said, “the animal shelter is overrun.”
I hated to think about the rabbits abandoned, so I went to the shelter to make a donation. In the lobby, a white rabbit with gold rims around his eyes was on display. I’d never owned a rabbit before, but I had to have him.
Back home, I set up a Facebook page for Flopsy Parker. Comments and questions flooded Flopsy’s page. “Where did you get him?” someone asked. “What do rabbits need to eat?” asked another.
I realized that Flopsy would be a great spokes-bunny for teaching about rabbit care. I made online posters with his image with tips about the importance of proper diet and regular vet visits. Soon, local and national newspapers were featuring stories on our campaign. We even appeared on Animal Planet!
Today, I head a nonprofit organization called Baskets for Bunnies. Our aim is to improve the lives of domestic rabbits through funding and public education. It’s all thanks to Flopsy, the Easter bunny angel.
