The Good Things

The Home to Heather Creek series editor reminds us to stay positive through negative events.

I’m sure you all saw the dramatic footage of the US Airways jet in the Hudson River last week. There were some scary moments, but after we knew everyone was safe, I—and apparently lots of others—couldn’t get enough of the news coverage of the event. I wanted to know all about the survivors and how they felt. I wanted to hear about the pilot and the things he did right to avert the crisis. I wanted to read about how the passengers helped each other. I wanted to revel in the fact that—finally!—there was some good news to dwell on.

And then, this weekend we heard rumors of an end to the struggle in the Middle East. We prayed for peace, and hoped for more promising news. This week, we celebrated the courage and the life of Martin Luther King, Jr., a man who brought hope and justice to our nation, and changed our country forever.

I found myself returning to these good things in my mind, and felt, somehow, more positive about the future. Isn’t it funny how that works? I thought about good things, and I felt my attitude become more positive. I was reminded of the verse from Philippians: “Whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.”
