As you age, your risk of falling increases, and that means you’re also more likely to be seriously injured as a result. Hearing, eyesight, strength and coordination change as you get older, and that can make it more difficult to balance.

Fortunately, the majority of falls can be avoided. Here are a few easy tips to reduce your risk:

Clear your floor of hazards like shoes, cords and throw rugs. Reducing clutter makes your home safer.

Install bright lighting in and around stairways, walkways and any other parts of the home where falls are especially likely.

Build up balance and strength through exercise. A variety of disciplines can improve balance and sharpen reflexes. Consider classes in yoga, Pilates, or Tai Chi at a fitness center, gym, community center, or online. You might also want to try strength training to build muscle and increase bone density.

Schedule annual hearing and vision exams. Your body’s balance perception depends on your eyes and ears, so have them checked regularly. If you already wear glasses or contacts, keep your prescription up-to-date.
