People spend more time at work than anywhere else. Yet, for most Americans, the workplace is a big source of stress, unhappiness or unfulfillment. While some people have the option of looking for a new job, many are unable due to family or financial obligations. Whether you are satisfied or disappointed with your career, there are things you can do to thrive at work.

1)  Manage your emotions and actions.
You can’t control your work environment, co-workers or tasks, but you can control your attitude. Oprah Winfrey reminds us, “Doing the best at this moment puts you in the best place for the next moment.”

2)  Work with a purpose.
Set a goal each and every day for what you want to achieve. Your goal could be to learn something new, grow in your area, help a co-worker, save enough money to pursue your dream or go on a vacation with the family.

3)  Stretch yourself.
Take on responsibilities outside your scope of work. It is a great way to learn, meet new people, build new skills and get noticed by others.

4)  Seek out strivers.
Surround yourself with people who aspire to achieve more than just a paycheck. Build a circle of individuals who have a passion for their job. Remember, positive energy is contagious, but so is negative energy.

5)  Pursue your passion.
Eventually it will lead you to great places. Steve Jobs once said, “Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven’t found it yet, keep looking. Don’t settle. As with all matters of the heart, you’ll know when you find it.”

6)  Keep God present.
Invite God into your workplace and always keep your faith. Begin each day in prayer and ask God to be with you throughout the workday.

Do you have any advice for those who may be struggling to thrive in their workplace? If so, please share.

Lord, no matter where we work or what we do, please help us to be our best. Give us the courage not to settle but to pursue our passion.
