After I got out of the Army, I went to dental school and joined my brother Mike in his practice. It was important to me that my fellow veterans got good dental care, but many couldn’t afford it. “They deserve healthy smiles,” Mike agreed one afternoon between patients.
Our hygienist looked up from the instruments she was cleaning. “You should get in touch with D-DENT,” she said. “Dentists for the Disabled and Elderly in Need of Treatment. They just got a grant to offer services to veterans.”
Both Mike and I were eager to offer our services pro bono for the organization. Our first patient? Our father! Dad’s a two-time Army Bronze Star with Valor recipient who fought in Vietnam.
Since then we’ve worked on dozens of other heroes like Dad. Giving them healthy smiles gives us something to smile about.
