How to Put Together ‘Cool’ Summer Outfits

The weather is warm and face masks are the new normal. How can you stay cool and comfortable in your clothes?

The coronavirus pandemic has put us in a position where we need to put our comfort second to our safety by wearing face masks. We can stay cool from the neck down, though, by dressing in ways that help our bodies regulate. After all, if you can’t chill out in summertime, when can you?

Choose Cool Fabrics
Natural fibers like linen and cotton are cooler than synthetic materials like polyester because, like all natural things, they “breathe.” Air flows through natural fabrics, helping you sweat less.

Dress Like an Athlete
Workout clothes are made for hot, sweaty activities, but you don’t have to be training for a marathon to be fashionable and comfortable wearing them. Stretchy, sweat-wicking fabrics that are easy to move in? Sounds like a summer plan!

Go with the Flow
If you want to feel summer breezes, choose outfits that encourage air flow. Light, spacious shirts, A-line dresses and other looser styles will help keep you cool.

Make Your Own Shade
If you’re going to be outdoors, you will feel a bit cooler if you shade your face. You can’t always be under an umbrella or among a lovely stand of trees, so make your own shade by wearing a hat. Wide-brimmed designs keep the sun off both your face and neck, and visors leave the top of your head uncovered so heat can escape.

Avoid Layers
Usually a staple of fashion, layers are not your friend when summer is at its steamy peak. Remember, we’re after air flow—so we need to give the heat an easy way to escape your body. Scarves and other layers are best saved until early autumn brings the first nip into the air.
