For comfort or coping with fear, turn to these Bible verses in the Book of Psalms.

Is there anything more comforting than the Book of Psalms?

Last Monday, at our Guideposts prayer fellowship meeting, my colleagues and I went around the table, reading requests from readers and sharing our own personal prayers.

I couldn’t help but feel a little overwhelmed thinking about all the problems in the world and the trials my family and friends are facing. Not to mention all the things I’ve been waiting on God for. (It’s hard to be patient when some of your prayer requests have been in existence since basically forever and don’t appear to be retiring anytime soon!)

Usually one person leads our prayer fellowship and ends the session with a reading. This time the leader was Caroline Cilento, an editor for Guideposts Books.

“I thought I’d read Psalm 27,” she said. “It’s my favorite.” She read the passage aloud:

Wait on the Lord;

Be of good courage,

And He shall strengthen your heart;

Wait, I say, on the Lord!

I couldn’t help but feel moved as I heard those familiar words. The Book of Psalms is my absolute favorite book of the Bible. I don’t know what I’d do without it. In fact, I always read Psalm 121–my personal favorite–whenever I’m nervous.

Even though I’ve long loved the Psalms, I’m always amazed whenever I stumble upon one that speaks to whatever I’m feeling at a particular moment.

What about you? What’s your favorite Psalm?
