I received a text from a friend who wanted me to do something important for him.
Just like me, his wife loves birds. He wanted me to come to their farm and photograph a woodpecker. Hmmm? Come to his farm, find this woodpecker and photograph it. Did I mention I needed to take a good enough photograph because he wanted to buy the print to give to his wife? That’s a shot in the dark!
I was up for the task, but knew I might come back empty-handed. I went to the farm and with the farmer’s help, headed out to find the woodpecker.
I was out there a while when he and his son spotted the bird. They drove me in their four-wheeler to the bird’s location. Now, the waiting began. A lot of birding and photography is about waiting.

Not only did the Lord help me find the woodpecker, I found its nest! The momma and daddy birds took turns feeding the little ones.
Much of life is about waiting. While we wait, it matures us, preparing us for what is to come. Maybe we aren’t ready for the thing we really want because the Lord knows it is not the right time. I am being taught this lesson in my life right now.
Trust the Lord’s timing!
