We often hear that Jesus Christ is the Light of the world. And that’s true, as Jesus himself proclaimed: “’I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life’” (John 8:12). Psalm 27:1 reminds us: “The Lord is my light and my salvation.”

Yet Jesus also told His followers long ago, “You are the light of the world” (Matthew 5:14) and that same truth applies to Christians today—YOU are the light of the world.

As we approach spring, it’s hard not to recognize what a difference light makes! Nothing can live without it. Vitamin D, essential to our well-being, is activated by sunlight. Without that vitamin, there is great risk of muscle weakness, softened bones, hip fractures and rickets, and possibly cancer and Alzheimer’s disease. In every respect light is vital to our well-being.

So how can you be light in a world of darkness and despair?

Think of what light does—it simply shines, and its rays bring guidance and life and health and blessing to all it touches. Jesus’ command is clear: “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven” (Matthew 5:16).  Jesus wants people to accept His light so completely that others see Him shining in their lives.

So how can you  let your light shine?

1. Practice kindness and gentleness.
2. Apologize when you are wrong.
3. Send a card to a friend or loved one you haven’t seen in a while.
4. Do small acts with love… like pay someone’s toll or let a hassled mother in front of you at the checkout.

“In all things show yourself to be a pattern of good works” (Titus 2:7).
