Why Pray?

At first, I wondered why so many people turn to prayer. Then I reflected on my own reason for praying.

Prayer is a powerful force for good. At Guideposts, we believe in the strength of prayer to bring comfort, hope, and healing. Your generous donation today will help us continue to share the power of prayer with those in need. Together, through prayer and support, we can make a difference.

Trust in the Lord with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding. (Proverbs 3:5)

Here at OurPrayer, we carry on the legacy of Dr. and Mrs. Norman Vincent Peale, people of prayer who welcomed others to join them. Last week, we held our Good Friday Day of Prayer, a one-day event instituted by Guideposts 43 years ago. More than 13,000 people submitted prayer request for themselves and their loved ones this year. It never ceases to inspire me to see the confidence people have in God.

When I first experienced a Day of Prayer event, I wondered why so many people turn to prayer. Then I reflected on my own reason for praying. Prayer is about not just the words I pray, but also the trustworthiness of the one to whom my prayer is directed. There has to be trust. If I cannot rely upon the integrity, strength, ability and confidence of God, then why bother praying?

Trusting God is the beginning of learning to pray. It is the kind of trust a child has for a parent. To trust God is to believe completely that God is who he says he is, to believe that he has the power to do what he said he would do. Without these truths, it is futile to pray.

I always have to stay focused on the “why” of prayer. Otherwise, I am prone to rely on my wisdom, which is limited. God’s wisdom is unlimited. My prayer point today is to ask you to reevaluate your prayer life to determine your trust level. Whenever I have been in a prayer rut, it has always been tied to my trust in God. How about you?

God bless you.
