You don’t have to use words to preach the Gospel

Prayer is a powerful force for good. At Guideposts, we believe in the strength of prayer to bring comfort, hope, and healing. Your generous donation today will help us continue to share the power of prayer with those in need. Together, through prayer and support, we can make a difference.

The majority of your life is spent at work. Unless you work at a Christian organization, it can seem challenging to balance your passion for Christ with your professional duties. For some, it may even feel as if you have to wear a mask to hide who you are, in an effort to respect company policy and your co-workers. However, there doesn’t have to be a conflict. As the saying goes, “Preach the gospel always, and if necessary, use words.”

Here are 4 ways you can share your faith in Christ at work:

1) Be a good steward.

Your job is both a blessing and an opportunity to serve. Show your gratitude to God by being a good steward of what He has given you. Show up to work on time or communicate in advance with colleagues who rely on you when you will be late. Complete your tasks with excellence and diligence. Give your employer a full day’s work and your co-workers will know you by the fruit you produce.

2) Be kind.

Whether you’re the boss or the intern, be kind and patient with everyone you deal with at the office. Step away or take a walk when you feel yourself becoming irritated with a co-worker and take some time to pray and gain clarity before you speak or respond out of frustration.  Refuse to participate in office gossip and if you can, gently steer nasty conversations into productive ones.

3) Pay attention.

The world is full of broken, hurting people, and you and your co-workers are no exception. Before you leave your home, pray that God will open your eyes for opportunities to serve. Reach out to that co-worker who doesn’t really fit in and invite her to lunch. In the break room, ask your co-workers how they’re doing and be genuinely interested in their answers. Do a small but thoughtful thing for that co-worker who is going through a tough time that doesn’t overstep appropriate boundaries.

4) Be flexible.

Apostle Paul said, I became all things to all men for the sake of the gospel. So must we. We must be willing to be flexible if we are to be impactful in diverse settings.  Adapt to your environment by finding creative ways to use your God-given gifts to bless others.

Inspirational quotes on your desk can encourage others who read them when they walk by or stop in to chat. Create a service project that you and your co-workers can do as team after work.  Suggest that your company adopt a family during the holidays. See what is missing in your office or what is causing low morale among employees and plan something that will give everyone a much-needed boost. The key is to find your ministry style and make it compatible with your surroundings.
