Did you know that chronic hunger affects one in every eight or nine people? That’s about 795 million people worldwide. What I find even more shocking is that children die more often than adults as a result of hunger, and those who do survive are at high risk of serious physical and mental health issues later on in life.
So you may be thinking, what can I do? Or how can I afford to help someone in need? There are many ways: Donate food to local soup kitchens, provide a meal to someone on the streets, get your community involved in a fundraiser. The list of ways to make a positive impact goes on and on.
What about prayer? This is something that we can all do. OurPrayer, a service of Guideposts is partnering with Bread for the World in their mission to advocate for a world without hunger. Prayer is essential for the work they do worldwide. We too can pray:
- For the Lord to give us and others “our daily bread”
- For all who struggle with hunger and suffer from malnutrition
- For our elected leaders to provide opportunities for people in need
- For the churches and organizations working together to serve those in need
- For the courage to make a difference in our world
In partnering with Bread for the World, OurPrayer is running a prayer campaign from October 12-18 in support of this mission. We must not give up on the fight against hunger. The Gospel calls us to action. As Jesus stated, “For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat.”
May Jesus’ presence in our lives empower us to take action that will create hope and opportunities for the hungry. Click here to join us in prayer to end hunger.
