The Virgin Mary is sometimes called Queen of the Angels. After all, it was an angel who told her she was chosen to be the mother of Jesus.

Over the years I’d prayed that Mary would gather the angels in heaven to help with problems big and small. So when my friend gave me a medal to remember Mary by, I was delighted. For 15 years that medal hung on my key ring, until the day I looked down and saw it was missing.

It has to be somewhere, I thought. I looked for it in all the obvious places: in the house, in the car, at the bottom of my purse, my disappointment mounting.

Finally I went out in the garden to get my mind off the medal. Lord, I know I’ll find it if it’s meant to be.

I got down on my knees at the flower bed and loosened the soil around each plant so water could sink into the roots. Under a pepper plant, my fingers felt something small and hard. I pulled a piece of metal from the ground and brushed off the dirt.

My medal! I’d never taken my keys into the garden. Yet when I was on my knees with a prayer, I found my memento of Mary, Queen of the Angels, and, perhaps, admirer of the lovely pepper plant.
