Travel to Spain with Angels on Earth

Destination Angels banner

Travelers to Spain will find angels to be a ubiquitous part of the nation’s scenery. Museums and cathedrals house angels created by artists in centuries long past, while other depictions are tied to modern traditions. Whether you want to learn more about angel art and history or simply want to admire angels’ grace and beauty, Spain has something for every angel lover.

Valencia Cathedral, Valencia, Spain

Valencia Castle, Valencia, Spain
In 1674, this fresco was concealed behind a false ceiling in Valencia Cathedral and then forgotten. Art restoration team members discovered the hidden artwork in 2004, after noticing pigeons flying out of a hole in the replacement ceiling. A tiny digital camera was inserted into the hole, revealing the fresco to human eyes for the first time in more than 300 years.

Playa de las Canteras, Las Palmas, Gran Canaria, Spain

Many artists work with oils or clay, but the talented folks who create the holy scenes at Playa de las Canteras, a beach near Las Palmas in the Canary Islands, prefer a more unique medium—sand. Visitors have enjoyed displays depicting the events surrounding Jesus’s birth, such as the Annunciation (pictured) every Christmas season since 2005.

Episcopal Palace, Astorga, Spain

Architect Antoni Gaudi’s original design for the Episcopal Palace at Astorga included angel statues adorning the roof. Gaudi resigned from the project before the angels were installed, and today, the stranded angels stand in the palace garden.
