A Most Unusual Christmas Tree

I am the vine, ye are the branches…—John 15:5 (KJV)

NORMAN VINCENT PEALE wrote about the most unusual Christmas tree he had ever seen, a lime tree that had been rescued from the trash by a church in Florida, whose congregation spray painted white and decorated with scraps of Scripture that had blessed their lives. Named the “Blessing Tree” people came from all over to read from the branches and be inspired. Dr. Peale asked each of us to reflect on how we might be the branches of God’s love.

Lord, show me how I can share the many blessings You have given me.

Signs and Wonders

So Jesus said to him, “Unless you see signs and wonders you will not believe.”—John 4:48 (ESV)

AS CHRISTMAS APPROACHES, recognize magical moments when someone or something touches your heart with the glorious spark of God’s love. Perhaps it’s the stillness of a snowy winter night that awakens your knowing of His presence, or an unexpected kindness, just when you need it. Be open to receiving His love this season.

Heavenly Father, help me to be mindful and see each and every one of Your precious gifts.

Solve Problems

If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.—James 1:5 (NIV)

Have you been wrestling with a problem? If something is troubling you, dedicate your prayer time to that specific issue. Separate yourself way from noise and interruption and ask for His help. He may have an exciting revelation for you.

In the midst of confusion, Lord, clear my mind so I can hear Your voice.

Respond with Love

But to you who are listening I say: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you.—Luke 6:27-28 (NIV)

Fighting fire with fire may work in forests, but it isn’t effective when it comes to relationships. Jesus taught that we should bless those who curse us, and return good for evil. It isn’t productive to respond to anger with anger, or hate with hate. As difficult as it may seem, Jesus promises peace to those who follow His instructions.

Restrain me Lord, help me draw upon Your peace, and respond with love.

God Shines Upon Us

The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.—John 1:5 (NIV)

Today as we change the clocks back, take a moment and look back on the past year. Remember all the good things that God has done for you. Visualize sunlight shining on the glorious moments of your past and extending brilliant rays of light ahead into the future.

Jesus, thank You for Your Light which brings new hope of glorious beginnings.

Let Go

Yes, I am the vine, you are the branches… apart from Me you can do nothing.—John 15:5 (NLT)

Each one of us is a living branch of this vine! If your energy and effort isn’t spent on deepening your connection with Jesus the Vine, your branches will dry up. Is there something that is getting in the way of maintaining a healthy and strong relationship with Him? Set your mind on letting go of any behaviors, thoughts or fears that separate you from God.

Heavenly Father, You are my Source of Life, the One and Only Vine.

Believing Is Beautiful

But if I say, “I will not mention his word or speak anymore in His name,” His word is in my heart like a fire, a fire shut up in my bones. I am weary of holding it in; indeed, I cannot.—Jeremiah 20:9 (NIV)

Beliefs aren’t something we take lightly. When we believe in something we feel it with passion and love. We defend and honor our beliefs. So when we accept Jesus Christ as our personal Savior and totally believe in Him, our lives are filled with new hope and new meaning. As in the above verse, the heat in your heart tells you of His inner presence. Your actions tell others.

Heavenly Father, may my life manifest Your love.

God’s Majesty

For everything God created is good, and nothing is to be rejected if it is received with thanksgiving.—1 Timothy 4:4 (NIV)

In autumn, evidence of God’s majesty is all around us—brightly colored leaves, pumpkin patches, blue sky and the shimmering of frost in the morning sun. Today, take a moment to enjoy the beauty of God’s creation.

Lord, the world is full of beauty. May I never take the wonder of Your creation for granted.

New Blessings to Come

Jesus replied, “No one who puts a hand to the plow and looks back is fit for service in the kingdom of God.”—Luke 9:62 (NIV)

As sure as day follows night, as inevitable as a sunset, change is part of God’s world. Be open to new opportunities that come with change and make an effort to gracefully navigate life’s changes. Stay calm and ask God for help adjusting to new circumstances—ask Him for hints of blessings to come.

Heavenly Father, help me recognize a new season of blessings.

Be Free!

So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.—John 8:36 (NIV)

Jesus came so that we could have life and have it more abundantly. As the above verse promises, when Christ sets you free, “you will be free indeed” and live a life of grace, free from fear. Rejoice, and let Him take away your worries and burdens!

When I am afraid, I put my trust in You. In God, whose word I praise— in God I trust and am not afraid. What can mere mortals do to me? (Psalm 56:3-4, NIV)

Infinite Faith

The grass withereth, the flower fadeth: but the word of our God shall stand forever.—Isaiah 40:8 (KJV)

As the leaves turn into a magnificent display of brilliant hues, which slowly drift downward leaving behind beautiful silhouettes of bare trees, we are reminded that life is finite—and that all living things at one time or another will wither and fade. It is our faith in an infinite God who promises life without end that helps us to see the autumns of life not as endings, but as beginnings.

Heavenly Father, help me to see the autumns of life with hope, knowing that every ending is the start of something new.

Live in the Moment

I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you.—John 14:18 (KJV)

Although God wants you to learn from the past and plan for the future, He wants you to live in the present. Right now, this moment is what counts. Be still and receive the gift of God’s comfort. Trust your future is in His hands.

Lord, help me to celebrate Your loving presence right here, right now.
