Sun and Shield

For the Lord God is a sun and shield: the Lord will give grace and glory: no good thing will he withhold from them that walk uprightly.—Psalm 84:11 (KJV)
Reflect on this verse: God is a sun; He makes things grow. Yet He is also a shield, protecting you from harm, giving you grace and glory to follow the right path. He is always working for your good!
Dear Lord, You are my God, my sun and my shield. You give me the grace and glory to live my best life!

The Best God Has for You

Then the Lord said to Moses, “I will rain down bread from heaven for you. The people are to go out each day and gather enough for that day. In this way I will test them and see whether they will follow my instructions.”—Exodus 16:4 (NIV)
God has promised to provide for your every need. Yet some of us allow greed, laziness or doubt to keep us from rightfully accepting His gifts. If you follow His instructions, you will experience the very best that God has for you.
Lord, thank You for understanding me—and my shortcomings—and loving me anyway.

Transformed by His Word

The Word of God is living and active, and sharper than any two-edged sword, even penetrating as far as the division of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart.—Hebrews 4:12 (NASB)
God’s Word has the power to transform your life. Follow His instructions and you will grow and change in ways you never imagined! When you open your heart and let His Word in, you will experience the most powerful force of mankind.
Lord, the power of Your Word is an incredible force that holds me steady and encourages me.

Angels Guard You

For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways.—Psalm 91:11 (NIV)
Guideposts founder Norman Vincent Peale said, “Always in the darkness, watching over you, is your Heavenly Father. His angels are keeping watch, banishing all fears.” Reflect on the intensity of God’s loving care for you. Trust that He sends His heavenly messengers to guide and protect you.
My Loving God, thank You for sending angels to light my way and keep me safe.

In Remembrance

Pray for each other so that you may be healed.—James 5:16 (NIV)
It’s been more than two decades since we experienced the devastating tragedy of September 11th. Reflect on the healing that has come since that day and the power of knowing that God has been with us, helping us through the pain and anguish of destruction and guiding us to be good to one another.
Dear Lord, on this solemn anniversary, we give thanks for Your presence in our time of need and remember all those affected by this tragedy. We pray for healing, harmony, peace and serenity.

Jesus Calms the Storms

The disciples went and woke him, saying, “Master, Master, we’re going to drown!” He got up and rebuked the wind and the raging waters; the storm subsided, and all was calm.—Luke 8:24 (NIV)
This glorious verse is perfect to turn to when you feel as if you’re in over your head. Take a deep breath and remind yourself that Jesus can calm even the most frightening storms. Have faith and be patient. You can be steady even in the roughest waters when you recognize that Jesus is at the helm.
Lord, because of You, I can have peace during the storms of life.

Sons of Thunder

James the son of Zebedee and John the brother of James (to whom he gave the name Boanerges, that is, Sons of Thunder)…—Mark 3:17 (ESV)
James and John were given the nicknames Sons of Thunder by Jesus, as they were brothers known for their fiery temperaments. Yet by the end of their lives, they were redeemed—beloved by those around them, completely transformed by the power of Jesus. God can do the same for you!
Father in Heaven, smooth my rough edges. Help me be a peacemaker.

Share What God Has Done

Then Jesus looked up and said, “Father, I thank you that you have heard me. I knew that you always hear me, but I said this for the benefit of the people standing here, that they may believe that you sent me.”—John 11:41–42 (NIV)
Jesus publicly prayed to benefit those around Him and foster their faith. He wanted others to witness Lazarus coming back to life, proof of God’s sovereign power. He wanted to prove, without a doubt, that God hears and answers prayers. Do you share your experience of answered prayers with others?
Heavenly Father, may the answered prayers of believers reach those who need a boost of faith.

Be Grateful for Hard Times

With praise and thanksgiving they sang to the Lord: “He is good; his love toward Israel endures forever.” And all the people gave a great shout of praise to the Lord, because the foundation of the house of the Lord was laid.—Ezra 3:11 (NIV)
Charles Spurgeon said, “Trials teach us what we are; they dig up the soil, and let us see what we are made of.” This is the upside to adversity. Not only do challenges reveal our character—they help us strengthen it. Only when you are navigating a difficult situation do you realize how strong and resilient you truly are.
Lord, tough times have been a great teacher to me. I am grateful that Your strength is my light leading me forward.

The Power of Humility

Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love.—Ephesians 4:2 (NIV)
God gives grace to the humble. Ask Him to help you release whatever prideful qualities are holding you back: seeking attention from others, judging friends and loved ones and feeling superior to them or feeling upset when you aren’t recognized for an accomplishment.
Lord, help me understand what it truly means to lead a humble life. How You see me is all that matters.
